About Outward Mindset

"One's mindset governs how one views the world, what one does, and how one does it. One's mindset can be self-focused, which Arbinger calls an inward mindset, or it can be inclusive of others, which Arbinger calls an outward mindset. It turns out that our actions and others' responses to those actions, end up being dramatically different depending on which mindset we are operating from.

The Outward Mindset teaches listeners how to shift more fully to an outward mindset and how to help others, even whole organizations, to make that shift- a shift that sparks innovation, increases accountability, and transforms collaboration, engagement, and fulfillment."

Paul Ottewell was educated at St. Bede’s College, Manchester and joined the Royal Navy in 1992. He holds a bachelor’s degree with honours from the University of Manchester and a master’s from King’s College London.

As a junior officer, Paul’s assignments spanned the submarine and surface flotillas including service in submarines, frigates and minehunters. This period culminated in command of a mine countermeasures vessel and two operational deployments in the Arabian Gulf.

As a senior officer, Captain Ottewell’s operational experience is centred in the Middle East. Promoted to Commander in 2014, Paul served first as a command advisor in HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. He then commanded the the UK’s Mine Warfare Force in the Arabian Gulf, serving simultaneously as a task group commander in the United States Navy Fifth Fleet on operations in response to instability in Yemen. On promotion to Captain in 2020, Paul first served as a Deputy Director in NATO Mission Iraq, providing consultancy to the Iraqi Ministry of Defence on the development of its military education programme.

In Whitehall, Captain Ottewell has experience of strategic financing, military capability planning and international capability collaboration, having served in both the Capability & Force Design and the Strategic Programmes directorates of MOD Finance and Military Capability (FMC). He began his current assignment in FMC International Capability Strategy in December 2021. His portfolio includes India, the Joint Complex Weapons Prosperity Office and the strategy for ensuring that Defence is ‘International by Design’.

An experienced facilitator and trainer, Captain Ottewell has served on the staffs of both Flag Officer Operational Sea Training and the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. He is a certified facilitator for the Arbinger Institute’s Outward Mindset framework, in which he delivers coaching and training across the Defence enterprise and on a voluntary basis in the public education sector.

A keen participant in endurance sports when the opportunity presents, Paul counts finishes in various marathons and long-distance triathlons among the highlights of past seasons. He is married and has two daughters. In his spare time, Paul is a deputy chair of a school governance board and pursues studies in organisational psychology and Modern Standard Arabic.
