Join the Cyber Community on 8 June at 1200 ET! Our speaker will be Colonel Chad Bates.

The war in Ukraine has brought up many areas that need to be closely examined considering multi-domain operations.   Cyber attacks are being conducted by state and non-state actors, electronic jamming is being leveraged by both sides, and a very comprehensive information operations campaign is being conducted by many players.   What lessons do we need to pull from current global events that we need to leverage to better prepare our armed forces and government for future combat situations.

Colonel Chad Bates currently serves as Chief, Strategic Simulations Division, within the Department of Strategic Wargaming at the U.S. Army War College. In that capacity, he supports the Army War College and outside organizations in their wargaming requirements with a team of professional, experienced wargame practitioners and designers.  He also instructors lessons on Cyber, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations, and Information Advantage operations for the U.S. Army War College.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychological Engineering. Additionally, he holds three masters degrees: Computer Resources and Information Systems Management from Webster University; Human Resources Management from Webster University; and one in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. In 2019, he earned his PhD in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Science from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

He has been an active duty Army officer for over 27 years, serving in three different career fields from field artillery, simulation operations officer (modeling and simulation expert), and finally as a cyberspace effects officer.  In these roles, he has gained experience in Intelligence, Cyber, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (EMSO), and Information Operations – particularly on how to model and simulate these effects for the larger combined force.  He has worked within the Intelligence Community for the past 12 years, with his past assignment being stationed with the U.S. Army Cyber Command (ARCYBER) in numerous roles, finishing up as a special advisor to the Commanding General of ARCYBER.
