Cyber Community Meeting

When:  Jan 25, 2023 from 12:00 to 13:00 (ET)
Associated with  MORS Community
Join the Cyber Community on 25 January at 1200 ET! Our speaker will be Joe Weiss presenting, "The Case for Process Sensor Monitoring at the Physics Level."

Hacking IT and Operational Technology (OT) networks will continue regardless of the cyber security technologies employed. OT monitoring systems monitor the networks and perform asset identification to identify the physical characteristics of all devices on the OT network including process sensors. OT monitoring systems cannot identify the integrity and authentication of the process sensor reading. It is vital that a “non-hackable”, ground truth view of the physical process be available regardless of the state of IT and OT networks. Moreover, process sensor monitoring is agnostic to the cause of the anomaly (e.g., sensor miscalibration, sensor drift, process/equipment anomalies, or cyber threats). This capability also has positive ramifications for credit rating agencies and insurance companies.

Joe Weiss is an expert on control system cyber security. He has published over 80 papers on instrumentation and control systems, control system cyber security, book chapters on cyber security for electric substations, water/wastewater, data centers, and cyber policy, and authored Protecting Industrial Control Systems from Electronic Threats. He has amassed a database of more than 17 million control system incidents. He is an International Society of Automation (ISA) Fellow, Managing Director of ISA99, a Ponemon Institute Fellow, and an IEEE Senior Member. He was featured in Richard Clarke’s book Warning – Finding Cassandras to Stop Catastrophes. He has patents on instrumentation, control systems, and OT networks is a registered professional engineer and has Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) certification, as well as Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC).
